Gas turbine power plant

The gas turbine power plant is an industrial plant to generate electricity by the use of an internal combustion engine powered by gas or diesel turboexpander. The principle of operation of gas turbines is similar to an aircraft jet engines. A compressor injects oxygen into the combustion chamber, air taken from outside, and here occurs the combustion gas or diesel generating thermal energy at high temperature. The heat motion pushes the gas turbine whose job is to convert heat energy into mechanical energy. The motion of the gas turbine is then used to generate electricity through a generator and an alternator. The main elements of a gas turbine power plant, then, are the following:

  • Compressor. The compressor is designed to suck in air (oxygen) from the external environment and injected at high pressure into the combustion chamber.
  • Combustion chamber. The combustion chamber is the place where they are burned real gas or diesel. From the burning releases a large amount of heat.
  • Gas turbine. The gas turbine converts the thermal energy in motion. From its rotation is then produced electricity.

The gas turbine power plants have a high energy performance by reducing the number of passes of the heat. For example, in a normal power plant the heat produced by combustion is used to create steam power necessary to run a steam turbine. Gas turbine power plants, however, the heat of combustion from the combustion chamber expands directly in the gas turbine pushing the bike. For this reason, the gas turbines are also known as the turbo. The chemical energy of combustion is immediately used by the gas turbine to generate mechanical energy. Having to work at high temperatures the gas turbine must be built with special heat-resistant alloys.
